Sometimes the universe works in magical ways.

While I was working on my book California One, back in August of 1987, I met an artist along the Santa Monica pier. We started talking and over the course of our conversation he asked if I had ever seen the Huntington Beach Surf Festival. I said no, I never had, I wondered aloud, “is the beach crazy crowded?" He said 100,000 people come to see this event! As soon as I heard that number, I imagined seeing all those people on the beach from above, an aerial view. I knew instantly that I needed to rent a helicopter. Seeing all these people lying on the sand from above, a quilt like tapestry of color was one of the highlights of creating California One.

As we circled over the ocean, we made one turn over the beach. I was lucky enough to catch this amazing view looking straight down. This photograph was used in an early self-promotion. We asked if anyone could find the naked lady on the beach. “She’s picture perfect.” It was one of the most successful promos we ever did. Can anyone find the naked lady?
