Artist Statement

Creating art feels like I am being the most authentic and true version of myself. I feel as though I was born to make art, look at art, be art. My artistic voice focuses on the beauty of women, empowering them through the use of poetry and glamorous colors, texture, and fashion. My creative process starts out with focusing on a general emotion for a series of paintings such as self love, using your voice, empowerment, love, growing, etc. I will start out with sketching the source I have created. Then my favorite part – I collage with scrapbook papers, fabrics, quotes, and a variety of pastes like glass bead gel, to add depth and a story line to the painting. Then I will use spray paint and paint markers, going into transparent oils to do washes and glazes. Finally, a few layers of opaque oils and a touch of cold wax mixed with oils finishes off the paintings. I utilize this process and the common themes to convey the beauty and strength in women, in feeling and expressing emotions, and how beautiful the blooming of love and self-love can be. Art makes life beautiful and I love that I can share that with the world and make people feel joy, awe, happiness, and empowerment just by looking at my art.

Biography

Christina Cowan is a full time artist in Connecticut as well as a licensed social worker. She grew up surrounded by art, as both her mom and aunt are artists and have shared an art studio together. She started out her young twenties with a career in social work and painting on the side, but has found over the past few years that being an artist is her true passion and focus in life, leading to her starting her own art business and connecting with local galleries. She is currently a student with the Milan Art Institute in their Mastery Program where her art has grown immensely and she has truly found her voice and unique artistic style. She notably has been accepted into multiple juried art shows including the Artists’ Cooperative Gallery and Hygienic Art Gallery, has had a solo art show and exhibit in the Clinton Art Gallery where she has now become a member, and finally, through Arts to Hearts Project, has been accepted into three art books (Arts to Hearts Project 101 Art Books Floral Edition, Arts to Hearts Project Colors, and Arts to Hearts Project Art and Women) and one magazine with a virtual art exhibit (theme of colors). She is also a member of Women in Arts Network.
