Artist Statement
I am Deborah Scott, a contemporary painter and the originator of Structural Omission, a framework in contemporary realist painting that positions omission as structural rather than stylistic within representation.
I am Deborah Scott, a contemporary painter and the originator of Structural Omission, a framework in contemporary realist painting that addresses the limits of observation, perception, and knowing. My paintings explore how images hold both knowledge and uncertainty, revealing that every act of seeing is partial.
Each work begins in realism and evolves through structural omission—built interruptions that expose what representation cannot resolve. In this framework, absence functions as load-bearing architecture rather than style. The omissions are integral to the painting’s structure, not decorative effects.
My process tests how much can be revealed before clarity collapses. I use classical oil techniques to build realism and then construct disruption into its foundation. The result is not an unfinished image but a complete system of tension between what can be seen and what remains beyond reach.
Structural Omission reimagines realism for a post-certainty era. It replaces resolution with precision and illusion with structure, creating paintings that acknowledge the limits of knowing while holding truth and doubt in the same frame.
My work examines the limits of knowing by constructing images that balance what is resolved with what resists completion. Built through classical methods of oil painting, each piece begins in realism and evolves through intentional disruption. These interruptions are not decorative gestures; they are structural.
In Structural Omission, absence is load-bearing. It holds the image together rather than breaking it apart. Each painting becomes a record of the shifting line between knowledge and uncertainty.
Rather than seeking narrative closure, my work accepts uncertainty as a form of truth. It reimagines realism for a post-certainty era, replacing resolution with precision and illusion with structure.
