Artist Statement

I view my work to evenly balance my opposing personality in relation to my interests. My “in real-life” personality tends to be filled with whim and silliness, which is just a fun way to explain that I often do not take things all too seriously; on the other hand, my interests have been referred to as pretentious from people within my circle. Those sparks of intrigue being various creative outlets such as visual art, music and film, along with English literature and artisanal fashion.

Outside of visual art, music is my most significant passion. My taste tends to lie within experimental pockets of the music scene— my favorite genres being both noise and drone, with a strong interest towards tape-music, various industrial genres (i.e. post-industrial and death-industrial), power electronics, lowercase, sound collage and musique concrète, among some other innovative scenes within experimental music.

The particular fondness for these genres is their emphasis on texture. Much of these aforementioned categories are very nuance-based— especially considering track lengths can range up to an hour (or even more).

To get to the point, there’s a level of separation from convention within the two realms. Experimental music and my paintings both rely on the viewer's niches and acquired taste—and to further the connection, both are highlighted by the textures of imperfection.

Again, my personality however leans towards acting a bit foolishly for the sake of enjoying myself. I like to promote my disposition within my work as well. I find that painting heavily stylized animals allows for my soft and silly characteristics to be seen. Even when I abandon the animals and create with pure abstraction, I manage to allow this child-likeness to stay prevalent. Often by so-called “squiggles” that sort of juxtapose the more gestural movements.

A lot of intrigue for me lies within various dichotomies. I like to express this physically and conceptually by displaying unconventional techniques with a bit of silliness, as that is who I am at the end of the day. I can become so passionate allowing me to flawlessly articulate grand interests of mine and make unfunny jokes that mainly appeal to myself only. It is very important to me to have myself displayed on the canvas (or paper and cardboard boxes). It is my work, and I’d like to bleed onto the page to reveal myself, both the silly and pretentiousness.
