Artist Statement

My work is a representation of how I perceived the world while growing up in the early 2000’s. 9/11 had just happened, and the US invasion of the middle east was underway. As a small child I was constantly aware of the looming manufactured threat of terrorism and a collapsing economic system. Burning towers, masked militants, and fatality statistics became archetypal symbols in the collective American mind, becoming pervasive in the media, at dinner tables, and even classrooms. Me and other late millennial children during that time had just witnessed what I would call a mass ritual sacrifice to the Neoliberal Demiurge. In the present day, this mass ritual had triggered forever wars, and deep cultural splits. The goal of my work is to serve as an offering to the ghosts of our pasts, to use nostalgia as a form of necromancy, to gain wisdom and understand the future of our socio-political condition.

Biography

Born and raised in Sag Harbor, William Broich is an artist and printmaker currently working in the Hamptons, where he often assists with workshops and editioning jobs, as well as building his own portfolio, through the Inspiration Plus Foundation. William studied at SUNY Purchase college in the printmaking program, where he was trained in the traditional print processes. Although he favors the process heavy nature of print, William often constructs his images in a very loose and automatic style. William finds inspiration in the western occult tradition, often referring to his art as “Magickal pentacles, that are an extension of the will.” Woodcut, monotype, and intaglio are his main areas of concentration, but William likes to branch out into sculpture as well.
