Artist Statement
I create intimately scaled figurines inspired by my dual Spanish and Mezoamerica heritage. Growing up as a Mexican American in a Catholic household small sculptures always decorated my family homes. Particularly significant figures came out during religious celebrations. There was a clear connection between our nativity scenes, Mary’s and king cake Christs, and the ancient stone figures that remind us of the ancient history of Mexico.
My work attempts to fill a deeply human need to imbue objects, especially small objects we can hold, with profound significance to help us process the parts of reality we experience internally. A figure to ward off misfortune, attract love, increase fertility, honor traditions, inspire virtues, or simply a vessel to channel your prayers and meditations. My work aims to bridge the gap from ancient forms to contemporary sculpture while retaining the intimate sensation figurines can bring out in a viewer.
